{ “title”: “The 11pm Scroll Hole”, “slug”: “11pm-scroll-hole”, “metaDescription”: “The 11pm scroll hole from the inside: chest tight, eyes dry, can’t remember what I read. This is what late-night scrolling actually looks like for a knowledge worker who can’t stop.”, “content”: ”# The 11pm Scroll Hole\n\nIt’s 11:43 PM on a Tuesday. Phone in my hand again. Not because I want to be on it — just because it’s there, and I’m there, and the apartment is dark except for the blue light bouncing off the ceiling. My chest has been tight for about an hour.\n\nI tell myself “just five more minutes.” Then I look up and it’s 12:34 AM and I don’t even remember what I was looking at. A stranger’s vacation photos. Some thread about a man quitting finance to bake bread. Something.\n\nMy roommate is asleep. The walls are thin. I can hear him breathing. I’m sitting on the edge of my bed, both feet on the floor like I’m about to stand up. But I’m not standing up. I’m just sitting.\n\nMom called earlier. She asked if I was eating well. I said yeah, totally. She said “you sound tired.” I said I’m fine, just a long day. She goes, “long day is one thing, this is every day now.” I laughed. She didn’t.\n\n## What the Scroll Hole Actually Looks Like\n\nI want to be honest about what I’m doing in there because I think people picture something specific — like, you’re zoning out watching funny videos. That’s not it. Or maybe it is for other people, I don’t know. For me it’s not even content I’m enjoying.\n\nI’ll open TikTok. I’ll swipe past three things without watching them. I’ll see a guy crying about his divorce and I’ll keep going. I’ll land on a woman making pasta in a tiny kitchen in Lisbon and I’ll watch the whole thing, even though I don’t cook. Then I’ll see someone yelling about how their boss screwed them over and I’ll feel something — my stomach tightening — and then I’ll swipe past it because it’s too much.\n\nIt’s not entertainment. It’s not even distraction. It’s like my brain is asking for a hand to hold but I don’t want anyone’s hand. I want to be alone and not alone at the same time. I can’t even explain why. I type “is” into the search bar sometimes. Just the letter. Just to see what comes up.\n\nThe worst part is I know exactly what time it is. I know I’m doing it. I know I’ll feel like shit tomorrow. There’s no illusion. I’m watching myself do it in real time and I’m still doing it. That’s the part I can’t talk to anyone about.\n\nIt’s not boredom. It’s something else. It’s that I don’t want to sleep. I want to not exist for a while. I’m not in danger. I’m not anything like that. I just want to put down the version of me that has to answer emails tomorrow and respond to Slack messages and pretend to be fine in a standup at 10 AM. I want a different version of myself for a few hours. The phone gives me that version. The phone gives me a me that isn’t me.\n\n## The 2 AM Things I Read\n\nLast Wednesday at 2 AM I read a four-part series on how to tell if you’re a high-functioning sociopath. I don’t think I’m a sociopath. I’m pretty sure I’m not. I just read it. Then I read about whether introverts can be leaders. Then I read a thread where someone asked “what’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve done at work” and I read 200 comments.\n\nThen I read about a woman whose husband died in his sleep and how she found him. Then I read about the optimal temperature to sleep at. Then I read about a guy who retired at 35 and moved to a farm. Then I read about how to know if you’re in the wrong career. Then I read about a teenage girl who got accepted to 14 colleges.\n\nI don’t remember any of these. I couldn’t tell you her name or his name. But I read them all. My chest got tighter with each one. My eyes got drier. My palms got sweaty around 2:30 and I don’t know why. I think I was looking for something but I have no idea what.\n\nAt 2:47 AM I read a list titled “Signs you’re more tired than you think.” It had eleven items. I had nine of them. I scrolled past it and went to the next thing.\n\n## Morning Is Worse Than The Night\n\nHere’s the part I haven’t told anyone. The nights are almost fine now. I’ve made my peace with the 11pm scroll hole. It’s my time. Whatever.\n\nThe mornings are what’s killing me.\n\nI wake up at 7:50 with nine minutes to log in. My hair is wet from the fastest shower I’ve ever taken. My coffee is black and too hot and I burn my tongue on it anyway because I can’t wait. I open Slack before I open my eyes fully. There’s a message from my manager — “quick sync at 10?” — and my stomach drops before I can even read the rest.\n\nI’m foggy. Not tired-foggy, like a different kind of foggy. Like my brain has been running a background app all night and now it’s slow. I forget what I’m saying mid-sentence at standup. Someone asks a question and I say “yeah, totally” before I know what they asked. They laugh. I laugh. Nobody notices.\n\nI drive to work and I can’t remember the drive. That’s the part that scares me. I park and I look at my phone and it’s 9:14 and the last forty minutes are just gone.\n\nBy 3 PM I have a headache behind my right eye. By 5 PM I have an opinion about nothing. By 8 PM I tell my roommate I’m going to bed early. He says “good for you.” I say “yeah.” I get in bed. I open my phone. It’s 9:47 PM.\n\nI’m not even tired anymore. I’m something else. I’m awake in a way that’s almost violent, like my body is punishing me for trying to give it rest.\n\n## I Tried to Fix It. Sort of.\n\nThree weeks ago I downloaded an app that locks you out of social media after 10 PM. I paid $4.99 for the premium version. I lasted four nights.\n\nNight one I locked it at 9:55 and stared at the ceiling. I got up and got water. I got up and went to the bathroom. I got up and checked if the app was still working. It was. I went to bed at 11:15 and didn’t sleep until 1.\n\nNight two I made it to 10:08 before I turned it off. The app asked me “are you sure?” with a sad face emoji. I said yes. I felt like I was betraying someone.\n\nNight three I didn’t even open the app. I just used Safari.\n\nNight four I deleted the app because it was on my home screen and I felt embarrassed by it.\n\nMy roommate suggested I read a book. I have three books on my nightstand right now. I’ve read twelve pages of one of them in six weeks. Twelve pages. I know this because I keep a bookmark at page twelve and check it sometimes, just to feel something about it.\n\nI tried melatonin. I tried a sleep meditation that a YouTube video recommended. I tried putting my phone in the kitchen at night. I woke up at 2 AM and walked to the kitchen in the dark and brought it back to bed like it was a child.\n\nI know this isn’t a phone problem. I think. Or maybe it is. I don’t know. I just know that I’ve been doing this for ninety-something nights in a row now and I haven’t stopped, and every morning I feel like I’m slightly behind on being a person.\n\n## The Thing Nobody Mentions\n\nThere’s a specific kind of lonely that only happens at 11 PM when the lights are off and the phone is on. It’s not the lonely of being alone. I’ve been alone before. I lived alone for two years and I was fine. I had a routine. I cooked dinner. I watched movies. I went to bed at a normal time.\n\nThis is a different lonely. This is the lonely of being in a city of twelve million people and choosing to spend the only quiet hours of my day holding a rectangle that connects me to everyone except anyone. I have 1,247 followers on Instagram. I have 412 connections on LinkedIn. I have a group chat with my four best friends where the last message is a meme from eleven days ago. I could text any of them right now. I won’t.\n\nThat’s the part I’m not proud of. I could reach out. I don’t. Not because I don’t like them. Because I don’t want to explain what I’m doing right now, which is sitting in the dark at 11:53 PM with my phone three inches from my face, writing paragraphs in my head that I’ll never send to anyone.\n\nI’m not building anything. I’m not healing. I’m not even numbing. I’m just here. Sitting here. Doing this.\n\n## Verdict\n\nI know this isn’t right. I’m conflicted too. I think about it almost every morning, sitting in the parking lot at work with my coffee getting cold. But I just… I don’t know what to call it yet. I don’t know what to do about it either. Not right now. Tonight, it’s 11:47 PM and I’m going to do it again. Tomorrow I’ll feel like hell.
