Slim Wallet For Men
I bought this thing from a Ridge ad on Instagram. $95, not $79 like the homepage banner tried to tell me — there’s some kind of “first-time buyer” thing they do. Been carrying it for four months now. Daily. Every single day. From the L train at 8:47 AM to my standing-desk job in Midtown, this wallet has been in my front right pocket through basically everything.
But here’s the thing nobody told me before I dropped almost a hundred bucks on a piece of metal that holds like six cards.
Why did I even want a slim wallet? Easy. Last December I sat down in a cab and felt this weird sharp pain in my lower back. Like a knife. I told the driver to wait, stood up, adjusted, sat back down — same thing. Got home, took off my jeans, and saw the dent. A massive rectangular dent across the entire back right pocket. My old Fossil bifold had literally reshaped my Levi’s. I owned three pairs of jeans at the time. All three had the same dent.
That was the moment I snapped.
I remember staring at my dresser that night and going — what am I even carrying in here? A California driver’s license, two credit cards, an expired gym membership card I keep “just in case”, like four receipts from places I don’t remember going to, a Subway stamp card with three stamps on it, and exactly $11 in mixed bills. That’s it. That’s my entire financial life. And it was costing me $4 coffees at Blue Bottle because my butt hurt too much to sit properly.
Did some googling. Some Reddit scrolling. The Ridge kept popping up. So did the Bellroy. So did like 30 knockoffs on Amazon with names like “Slimcrafter Pro Ultra”. I almost went for one of those. A 5-pack for $19.99, free Prime shipping. Then I read reviews. One guy said the card slot snapped off in his pocket at the gym. Another said the spring mechanism stopped working after six weeks. Reviews like “great for the price” really mean “I threw it out after two months”.
Okay so the Ridge. Let me be honest about what got me.
It’s anodized aluminum. CNC-machined. Sounds like overkill for a wallet. Sounds like something an aerospace engineer would buy. I’m a graphic designer. I don’t need aerospace engineering. I need something that fits in my front pocket and doesn’t bend my jeans.
But the thing is — it’s so thin. 7mm thick. With six cards in it. My old bifold was 22mm thick and held the same six cards plus the random Subway stamps and the gym card I never use. The Ridge just — slices time off my back pocket. Slices depth out of my life. I don’t know how to explain this better.
It has this satisfying click. You push a button on the bottom, cards fan out like a switchblade but in a boring corporate way. My coworker Marcus saw me do it at lunch once and went “yo that’s sick” and I felt like I was twelve again showing off a fidget spinner. I’m 34. But the click is genuinely satisfying. Engineers did good.
Let me walk you through what actually happens in a day with this thing.
Morning. I leave my apartment in Greenpoint. I take the L train at Bergen Street. Before the Ridge, I would lean against the subway pole with my back pocket wallet and feel the pressure. Every. Single. Day. Now I lean against the pole and nothing hurts. I forget I’m even carrying money.
Coffee. I pay at Variety on Roebling. Tap the card. The Ridge has RFID blocking which is supposed to protect against “digital pickpocketing” — some scam where thieves scan your card through your pocket with a weird reader. Look, I’m not paranoid about it. But the Ridge blocking it doesn’t hurt. My credit card got skimmed once in 2019 at a bar in Greenpoint. $400 worth of DoorDash charges in Brooklyn. To an address I never heard of. So yeah, the RFID thing matters to me.
The Ridge doesn’t open like a normal wallet. You push a button. Cards come out one at a time, stacked. If you want cash, you slide it out from the money clip, or there’s a separate leather add-on I bought for $24.99 (Ridge’s site, not Amazon) for when I need actual bills.
The leather strap is a mistake. Let me explain.
I bought it because I thought “I’ll need cash sometimes.” Cash tip for the barber on Metropolitan Ave. Cash for the dumpling cart on Court Street when my card doesn’t work. Cash for the guy at the farmers market who refuses to take Venmo. The leather strap works. But it makes the whole thing thicker. Adds like 4mm. And the leather is this tan color that’s already getting grimy and stained after four months of use. I should have bought the cash plate version. Or just kept cash in my other pocket. Stupid mistake on my part.
Counterpoint time. Things I don’t love about the Ridge.
One — it’s loud on hard surfaces. If you put it on a table at a restaurant, it goes CLANK. Like a small piece of aluminum dropped from a height. My friend Daniella said it sounded like a tiny coffin lid closing. I couldn’t stop thinking about that for three days. It’s also slippery. Setting it on a slanted surface — like a slightly tilted café table — and it’ll slide off the edge. I lost it once at a sushi spot in the East Village. Slid right off the table, hit the floor, slid under the booth. I panicked. Found it eventually but I now just put it in my front pocket even at restaurants.
Two — the elastic band can stretch. After four months of daily use, the band that holds the wallet closed is starting to feel looser. I can fit maybe 8 cards now before it stops closing. I only carry 6 plus my license so I’m fine. But if you max it out, you’ll feel it.
Three — it’s not for people who hand out business cards. If you’re in sales, if you’re at networking events, if you want that satisfying snap of handing someone your card from a leather wallet — this isn’t it. You can’t dole out cards from a Ridge. You physically can’t. There’s no slot.
Four — price. $95 is a lot. My old Fossil cost me $45 in 2018. The Ridge is more than double. Four months in and the wallet is fine but I keep thinking — if I lost this tomorrow, I’d be upset. Not “oh well” upset. Real upset. There’s a way to justify it (I’m carrying it every day, it replaced a $45 wallet, it’ll last years, etc.) but $95 still feels like $95. Anyone reading this who’s broke like I was in 2019 — I get it. Get the Amazon knockoff. The Bellroy at $59 is solid too. But the Ridge is the Ridge.
Actually — I lied. The Bellroy is good but not great. I bought one for my brother. He returned it after a month. Said the stitching started fraying near the seam. That’s a Bellroy problem though, not a Ridge problem.
Who is this for?
You carry 3-7 cards. You wear jeans or chinos. You commute on public transit or sit for long periods. You hate back pain. You want something that lasts. You don’t hand out business cards. You don’t need to fold cash origami-style into your wallet.
Who is this NOT for?
You carry more than 8 cards. You need to organize receipts in your wallet. You hate the idea of paying $95 for any wallet, full stop. You want something that “looks like leather” because leather is part of your identity. You hand out business cards multiple times a week. You carry cash in thick bundles (the cash strap holds like 5 folded bills max, no more).
Specifics on what I use it for now.
NYC subway, daily — fits in front pocket, doesn’t bend, doesn’t fall out. I tap it through my pocket for OMNY without taking it out. The metal doesn’t mess with the RFID reader. I tested this like 14 times. Works every time.
Office kitchen — I sit on a stool to eat lunch. Before the Ridge, I’d sit weird to avoid the wallet dent. Now I sit normally. Nobody at work has commented on it, except Marcus that one time, and my other coworker Priya who said “is that a wallet or are you going to rob us.” She was kidding. Mostly.
Gym — Equinox in SoHo. I keep my membership card on a lanyard now, not in my wallet. The locker room floors are slippery marble. The Ridge does slide around when I’m changing. Annoying but not a deal-breaker.
Bars — bartender in Brooklyn last week asked me what the wallet was. I said Ridge. He said “oh I’ve seen those on TikTok.” I felt slightly embarrassed. But also slightly cool. Mixed feelings.
Travel — took it to Tokyo in March. Squeezed under tight jeans in a tiny airplane seat for 11 hours on ANA. No pain. My sister took a similar flight with her old Louis Vuitton wallet and complained the entire trip. I didn’t say anything. But I thought about it.
Price check for anyone reading this.
$95 on Ridge’s official website as of late July 2026. Sometimes they run sales. Sometimes they don’t. I paid full price. Amazon has it but third-party sellers jack up the price to $115-130 sometimes, which is wild. The $24.99 leather strap I bought was on Ridge’s site. The carbon fiber version is $145 if you want to flex harder.
Final verdict. Yeah I recommend it. Not for everyone. But if you’re a guy in your late 20s to 40s who carries a normal number of cards, hates the back-pocket dent, and doesn’t mind paying $95 for something that’ll outlive three pairs of jeans — get it. If you’re broke or you need your wallet to also function as a card holder at networking events — don’t. Save your money. Get a $20 Amazon one. Live with the dent.
I keep mine in the front pocket. Right side. Every day. For four months now. It’s still in good shape. No scratches you’d notice unless you’re looking. The aluminum has this matte finish that hides fingerprints. The little rubberized plate on the back keeps it from sliding out of my pocket when I sit down — which was a real fear, by the way, I thought it would just shoot out of my jeans like a hockey puck. Hasn’t happened. Not once.
If I lost it tomorrow I’d buy the same one. That’s the test, right? Would I repurchase? Yeah. I would.
Slim Wallet For Men - if your back hurts on the subway and your wallet is shaped like a brick, this fixes it. If you need receipts and business cards, it doesn’t. YMMV.
