It arrived in a box that was way longer than I expected. My apartment’s elevator is tiny and I had to angle it sideways like I was smuggling a surfboard into a dorm. Took me like25 minutes to assemble, mostly because I kept dropping the base and my cat thought the cardboard was a new toy.

If you need actual task lighting and want something with more design cred, look at the Hay PC Portable or the Artemide Tolomeo — both are gorgeous but both are way over $100. Different category.

What I actually do with it every day

I turn it on at like 6pm when I start winding down for the evening. It’s set to a warm amber color that the app calls “Candlelight” (and unlike the others, this one actually lives up to the name). I keep it behind my monitor so it casts this glow on the wall behind my desk. If you already have a smart home setup with Hue or LIFX or whatever — get the bulbs instead, don’t add another app to your phone. Your sanity will thank you.

But if you’re like me — someone with a chaotic desk, a Pinterest board you can never quite achieve, and a cat who constantly photobombs your setup photos — the Govee gets you most of the way there for not much money. Three months in, I haven’t regretted it. I also haven’t achieved the Pinterest dream, but the lamp isn’t the reason.
