Aesthetic Bedside Lamp
Three months ago I almost threw my phone across the room at 2am. Couldn’t sleep. Brain still doing the thing where it replays every awkward thing I said since 2017 in random order. Like a highlight reel from hell. So I did what any normal person does at 2am — I bought a lamp. Specifically this aesthetic bedside lamp off Amazon for $24.99. And honestly? It’s the cheapest therapy I’ve ever paid for.
Let me back up.
I live in a 380 sq ft studio in Brooklyn. My “bedroom” is also my “living room” is also my “office” is also my “place I pace when I’m stressed at 3am.” The only overhead light is this brutal fluorescent tube that my landlord refuses to replace. It makes me look like I’m being interrogated. Every time I turn it on at night my brain goes “oh we’re at the DMV, this is fun now.”
So I’d been using my phone as a light source for like two years? Bad idea. Doomscrolling at 2am with the screen three inches from my face? Yeah, that’s how you fry your eyeballs and your circadian rhythm in one shot. My optometrist last year was like “your eyes are tired.” No kidding Brenda, you don’t say.
I saw this lamp on TikTok first. Some girl had it on her nightstand and the warm light was doing that whole golden hour thing on her face. She had a book open. Her sheets were rumpled in a cute way. I was like “okay that’s not real life but I want it.” Clicked the link. $24.99 on Amazon. Free shipping with Prime. Took like 2 days to arrive.
The brand is LEPOWER, if anyone cares. Not that I’d heard of them before. They’ve got like 50,000 reviews on this lamp specifically which is either a good sign or means the algorithm loves them. Jury’s still out on that one.
Here’s the thing though. When it arrived I opened the box and thought “this looks kind of dumb.” It’s small. Like, smaller than my fist. The shade is this linen-y fabric thing that I assumed would get dusty in like 3 days and look like a thrift store relic by month 2. And the base is just a circle. Not exactly mind-blowing design. Looks like a lampshade had a baby with a hockey puck.
But I plugged it in anyway. And that’s where it got me.
The light is 2700K warm white. I looked up what that means — basically it’s the same color temperature as old incandescent bulbs. The kind your grandma probably still has in her kitchen. Not the blue-white LED stuff that makes your apartment feel like a hospital waiting room or a mid-2000s office building.
I clicked it on and my whole room shifted. Suddenly the walls were that creamy peach color. My plants looked healthier (they weren’t, I checked). My cat stopped looking judgmental — probably not related but I choose to believe so. The light is soft in a way that makes everything look slightly more cinematic. Like you’re in a movie where someone is about to make a meaningful decision.
Okay let me actually walk you through what I like and don’t like, because nothing’s perfect and reviews that say “10/10 loved it best thing ever” are lying.
The good:
- The dimmer is on the base, not some weird touch sensor. Just a little knob. Twist left, gets darker. Twist right, gets brighter. Why is this such a small win? Because every other lamp I’ve owned in the last decade had some “tap three times to turn off” nonsense that never worked when I was half asleep and just wanted darkness. This is a knob. Knobs work. We should bring back knobs for everything.
- It has three color temperatures. Warm, neutral, cool. I keep it on warm 99% of the time but neutral is nice when I’m actually trying to read a book instead of staring at the ceiling thinking about whether I responded to that email from 2019 weirdly.
- The shade is linen. I thought I’d hate it. Six weeks in, no dust issues. I just hit it with a lint roller once a week. Five seconds of effort.
- The bulb is replaceable. I cannot stress this enough. So many lamps now have built-in LEDs that die after 2 years and you’re stuck with a $50 paperweight you can’t fix. This one you can swap. Standard E26 socket. Just go to the hardware store.
The not-so-good:
- The base is kinda small. My cat has knocked it off the nightstand twice in three months. Not the lamp’s fault — my cat is a menace who thinks everything on flat surfaces is a personal challenge — but worth knowing if you have a chaotic pet or small children.
- The cord is white. Why. Just why. My walls are cream and the cord sticks out like a sore thumb. I tucked it behind the headboard but it still peeks out and I’m mildly annoyed about it every single night.
- It’s not super bright. Like, this is not a “do your makeup” lamp. This is a “sit in your feels and maybe read a chapter” lamp. Know what you’re buying.
Okay the cord thing is annoying BUT at least it’s not as bad as the lamp I had before which had a cord that literally came unplugged from the base if you looked at it wrong. So. Perspective.
Who is this for? People who want ambiance, not a sun. People who read in bed. People who have anxiety brains that won’t shut off at night (hi, welcome, we have jackets). People who live in small spaces and don’t want a giant lamp dominating their already-crowded nightstand. People who like warm light specifically — the warm light on this lamp is the whole point.
Who is this NOT for? People who need task lighting. If you’re doing detailed work or you need to actually see what’s on your desk to find that one paper you needed five minutes ago, get a different lamp. This is vibes-only. Also if you have a partner who needs it pitch black to sleep, this won’t work for them because it does emit a soft glow even on the lowest setting.
Let me talk about the warm light thing specifically because that’s what I care about.
Warm light, like 2700K warm light, actually does something to your brain. I read this — and look I’m not a scientist, I barely passed high school chem — but the research says blue light at night messes with melatonin production. Melatonin is the sleepy hormone. Warm light doesn’t mess with it as much. So when I’m winding down, having a lamp that emits warm light instead of opening my phone (which is basically a blue light factory) actually helps my brain get the message that it’s bedtime and not time to fight strangers on Twitter.
I tested this for two weeks. Like, actually tested it. The first week I used my phone in bed like normal. Took me an average of 47 minutes to fall asleep. Some nights I was up till 3am just thinking. The second week I read a physical book under this lamp instead. Took me 23 minutes on average to fall asleep. Could be placebo. Could be that I was reading a really boring Russian novel. But I felt better those two weeks. I did.
My sleep tracker also showed a small bump in deep sleep. Not a huge one. Like 8% more. But I’ll take 8% more deep sleep over zero percent more deep sleep.
There’s also the mood thing. Hard to quantify but I just felt… calmer? At night my room used to feel like a holding cell because of that overhead fluorescent nightmare. Now it feels like a place I want to be. Like a little cave of warm light and quiet. My therapist said that’s probably a real thing, the environment affecting your nervous system. She said it casually. I won’t forget it.
One night I had a panic attack around midnight — the kind where your chest gets tight and you can’t remember why you walked into the kitchen. I sat on my bed with this lamp on for like an hour. Didn’t read. Didn’t scroll. Just sat there. And it helped. I know that sounds fake. It helped.
Okay so would I buy it again?
Yeah. Probably. The price dropped to $19.99 like a month after I bought it (Amazon does this, classic move, drop prices right after you buy so you feel things) and I didn’t return it because by then I was emotionally attached. That’s the kind of relationship I have with objects in my apartment. Don’t judge me.
Actually one thing I want to mention — there are two sizes. The smaller one is like 6 inches tall. The bigger one is like 10 inches. I got the bigger one. Some reviewers online say the small one is too dim even for bedside use. I believe them. Get the bigger one. Trust me.
If you’re someone who’s been doomscrolling at 2am and your sleep is garbage, try this. $24.99 (or $19.99 if you wait, but I’m not patient). It’s not magic. It’s just a lamp. But it’s a lamp that makes my room feel like a hug, and sometimes that’s enough.
Final thought: I bought a lamp. I use it every night. My 2am doom sessions have gone from “every night” to “like twice a week.” My room looks better in photos now, which is shallow but real. My cat still judges me but softer now. $24.99 well spent.
Oh, one more thing. If you’re curious about installation — there’s no installation. You plug it in. You click the switch. You twist the knob if you want it dimmer. That’s it. No app. No “connect to wifi.” No firmware update at midnight. Just a lamp. Like the olden days.
